First Hanergy Now Goldin: Top Hong Kong Stocks Drop Like Stones

byKyoungwha Kim

May 21, 2015

Hong Kong’s best-performing stocks this year are tumbling even faster than they rallied.

Goldin Financial Holdings Ltd. and Goldin Properties Holdings Ltd., controlled by billionaire Pan Sutong, plunged more than 60 percent in Hong Kong trading Thursday. There was no immediate explanation for the drop. Before the rout, the two stocks surged more than 300 percent in 2015 for the biggest gains on the Hang Seng Composite Index. Continue reading

Continue reading

UPDATE: Is Hanergy The Next Yingli Green Energy?

By Shuli Ren

Chinese thin-film solar manufacturer Hanergy Thin Film (566.Hong Kong) lost one-third of its market value this morning, for no apparent reason other than that it may have been overvalued for a long, long time.

Understanding Hanergy

I sifted through reputable local Chinese media and found nothing damning on Hanergy this morning (Please let me know if you see anything!). Users on China’s microblog Weibosuggested that perhaps Yingli Green Energy‘s (YGE) 45% slump in the last two days have raised alarm bells on Hanergy?

Mystery Chinese Solar Maker Plunges, Losing Nearly $19 Billion in 24 Minutes

byBilly Chan

May 20, 2015

Hanergy Thin Film Power Group Ltd., the Chinese solar equipment maker controlled by Li Hejun, suspended trading in Hong Kong after the stock plummeted 47 percent in morning trading.

The stock fell to HK$3.91 before the suspension at 10:40 a.m., shaving HK$144.3 billion ($18.6 billion) off its market value, on the day of its annual general meeting in Hong Kong. Chairman Li didn’t attend the AGM, T.L. Chow, the company’s external spokesman, said by phone.

Before today’s decline, the stock had surged more than six-fold in the past year despite questions from analysts and investors about the company’s revenue sources. About 61 percent of Hanergy Thin Film’s sales derive from Beijing-based parent Hanergy Holding Group, the listed company said in March. Continue reading

Stock manipulation: Galada Power & Telecommunication

14 May 2015

Moneylife

In less than a year, the stock price of Galada Power & Telecommunication shot up by 813%. Astonishing for a company which has been declared sick

Galada Power & Telecommunication (GPT) manufactures electrical conductors and related products. In 2001, Galada’s bankers initiated legal proceedings for recovery of debts. GPT had defaulted in the payment of dues to its lenders and was declared a sick company by the Board for Industrial & Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) in September 2007. The order for winding up the company was stayed by the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Over the past year, a couple of lenders agreed to a one-time settlement of dues. GPT has generated revenue of just about Rs2 crore-Rs3 crore in each of the past five quarters with a net loss in a couple of quarters. Yet, the stock price shot up by 813%, to a high of Rs30.85 as on 27 February 2015 from Rs3.38 as on 26 March 2014, i.e., an investment of Rs1 lakh would have grown to Rs9 lakh in less than a year. From the peak, the price has fallen by nearly 25% to Rs23 on 5 May 2015. Despite the steep fall, it is still nearly 580% up compared to a year ago. The regulators, as usual, do not find this suspicious.

Vipshop – Gross Vs. Net

May. 17, 2015 5:33 AM ET  |  About: Vipshop Holdings (VIPS)

Two research reports came out recently against Vipshop Holdings (NYSE:VIPS), a Chinese e-commerce company listed on NASDAQ. One report, from Beijing based J Capital, apparently focuses on differences between US regulatory filings and Chinese statutory filings. The J Capital report has not been made public, and my observations are based on the press reports. The company has pushed back on this report saying J Capital read the wrong statutory filings. I don’t put much faith in these types of analyses, since there are many reasons why those filings might be different that don’t point to fraud in the US filings.

The other report, from heretofore unknown research firm Mithra Forensic Research (Mithra). Mithra has taken the more traditional short selling research methodology so effectively used by the likes of Muddy Waters that involves throwing the kitchen sink at the company. At the heart of Mithra’s allegations is that VIPS is improperly recording revenue. Continue reading
